RUFC - Emlyn Hughes Honoured

Rotherham United ex player/manager, Emlyn Hughes is being inducted into the Football Hall of Fame.

RotherFM say that more than five thousand people voted online for England legend, Hughes.

Emlyn played sixty times for the Millers in the early 80's and scored five goals.

Crazy Horse, as he was nicknamed after a rugby-like tackle on Newcastle's Albert Bennett (who was also an ex Miller), began his career with Blackpool in 1964 but is more famously known for playing for Liverpool where he stayed for twelve years before moving to Wolves. After moving to be player/manager with the Millers he went to play for Hull and Swansea. He also got sixty-two caps for England, captaining them on a number of occasions.

Emlyn was captain on the Sports Quiz show, Question of Sport where he famously said that a photo of Princess Anne was jockey John Reid!

After his football career ended he became an after-dinner speaker and became chief patron to FABLE an Epilepsy charity based in Sheffield where he lived.

In 2003 it was announced that he was suffering with a brain tumor for which he had treatment and continued to battle against the disease until his death on 9 November 2004 aged just 57.

Whatever Emlyn Hughes did he did with enthusiasm and with a big smile on his face and I, for one, believe he deserves this honour.

Nice to see him honoured, as you say always played with a smile very rare.

I loved to watch him on A question of sport. For quite a physical player he seemed completely different off the pitch. Then again he played in an era where you would never have lasted if you didn't put your foot in.
