'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Should Premiership Money be used for FL?

The Chairman of the Football Association, Lord Triesman has told the BBC that he would like to see more of the Premiership cash going down to the lower leagues to help them.

Speaking at the FT Sport Summit, Lord Triesman said, 'There needs to be a greater equality of resources available to individual clubs.'

Over the next three years, the Premier League is paying 30m a year to the Football League which includes parachute payments to the three relegated clubs. But Lord Triesman wants more. 'To it's credit the Premier League does distribute money but it is only a degree of equalisation.

'One of the things I am concerned about is that the further down the pyramid you go is the financial frailty of many clubs that are integral to their towns.'

The Premier League have a current deal with broadcasters that, over three years, will earn them more than 2.3bn with just 90m of that going to Football League clubs.
