RUFC - Jim wants a spell of good weather

RUFC - Jim wants a spell of good weather

Rotherham United had to postpone their second game at Don Valley this season, when the weather turned nasty again, on Tuesday.

The first game was in December against Aldershot when the pitch was waterlogged and on Tuesday the snow got the better of the pitch although, groundsman, Jim Davison, did everything he could to get the game on. He had left a covering of snow on the pitch to try and insulate it and had people ready to move the snow off if and when required.

'We called the referee in and he inspected it at 10.30 am,' Jim told The Advertiser. 'He asked me what I thought and I was concerned about the temperature falling after tea. It was about -3 and we might well have ended up calling the game off in the evening, which would have been no good for anyone. If it had been a 3.00pm kick-off we might have been alright but the best thing was to postpone and try again next Tuesday.'

There is going to be a lot of wear and tear on the Don Valley Pitch in the next few months. The Sheffield Eagles Rugby League team have their first game there on Sunday - though they are only allowed five games before the football season ends - and non league football team Parramore Sports are playing on it plus our own Reserves. Jim admits with all this going on it's an extra challenge for him and his staff. 'It looks like there will be two games a week played on the pitch between now and the end of the season and it's tough trying to keep it in good condition. The Don Valley ground staff are nice people and provide support. If we can get a spell of nice weather then we stand a chance.'
