RUFC - Locals want guarantee's from Millers
Rotherham United yesterday named an area in Wingfield where they want to build the new training ground but locals are wanting some assurances from both the club and the council.
Roughwood Road Playing Fields is currently used by Greasbrough Youth teams, the Buck and Griffin FC and The Plough FC and also as a recreation ground for the public and Michael Sylvester, a member of the Wingfield Ward Independent Campaigners, wants reassurances that it will stay that way.
The Millers have been offered the land at £50 a year rent and Mr Sylvester told The Advertiser, that they are asking for consultation over the plans. 'We also want some cast iron guarantees,' said Mr Sylvester, 'from Rotherham United that the public will not be kept out. This land is a playing field where Kimberworth Park, Rockingham and Wingfield meet and I simply want to know what's in it for us. While I wish to see a successful Rotherham United with a new training ground, I don't want it at the expense of the fields' current users.
'If the report states that it is anticipated that any site would be fully secured and therefore excluded for use by the general public, I have asked what alternative facilities will be provided.'
The Councils strategic director for Environment and Development services, Karl Battersby, said, 'The details of the lease have yet to be finalised and as part of the planning process the public, and all interested parties, will be fully consulted as part of the planning process.'
Under the new deal, the club would develop the training ground, which would cost around £2m, plus pay the £50 annual rent. The lease would be for one hundred and twenty-five years with five yearly reviews and, it is to be recommended that if the club should ever cease trading then there would be provisions in the lease for the facilities to revert to the council.
