'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Cummins wants to taste Promotion

Micky Cummins breathed a sigh of relief when he headed in the winner against Grimsby on Tuesday night and hopes to put his nightmare of a summer behind him.

During the summer he had to go under the surgeon`s knife and then had family matters to deal with plus all the new players coming in vying for places so he had to get himself ready to play in double quick time.

'It`s been frustrating,` he told The Advertiser. 'I picked up an injury towards the back end of the season and then had an operation on my knee. I came back just in time for pre-season but I had to have a few days off when my son had to go into hospital. I`m not match fit but at least I`ve got on in the last couple of games. There`s more competition for places than ever here but it`s good to have that. This is one of the best squads I`ve been involved with and it`s difficult to pick eleven. `

Talking about his headed goal on Tuesday night he carried on, 'I`ve scored a few with my head. It`s about the timing of my runs and I managed to create some confusion among their defenders and capitalised on it. I made a case for myself on Tuesday and as there were a couple of injuries I hope I`ve given the gaffer a headache for Sunday!

'Before I retire I want to have tasted promotion and moved up to a higher level. I believe this squad here is strong enough to go all the way. To be honest, the end of last season and the beginning of this have blended into one because there is such a good team spirit here. There are no bad apples.

'It would be great to get automatic promotion but let`s remember nothing is won in August.
