'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Don Valley pitch IS level

Rotherham United groundsman, Jim Davison told The Advertiser that the pitch, at Don Valley, is level.

'Just because there's grass in one section and not as much in another does not mean it is not level,' Jim said. 'It's a trick of the eye and I can assure you that it is absolutely level.'

In recent weeks both Keith Hill, the Rochdale manager, and Lee Clark of Huddersfield have made complaints about the pitch, Clark, on Tuesday, saying it was uneven and dangerous. And, to be honest, I caught some of the Sheffield Eagles game on TV last night that was being played at Don Valley, and it looked pretty bumpy to me!

U2 held a concert at Don Valley where the stage covered about a half of the pitch and when we all went three days later the pitch was half grass and half dead. On Tuesday, the contractors laid a big T-shape of new turf leaving two separate quarters of the pitch bare and looking like a patchwork quilt.

'We've fertiliser ready to go on,' Jim carried on, 'and we've thrown loads of seeds on and with a bit more work the grass will shoot up. I know it's not nice on the eye but the pitch is eighty per cent OK and we've just got to get the twenty per cent back now.'
