Rotherham Reserves v Grimsby Reserves report

Grimsby Town 2 v Rotherham United 4

Rotherham Reserves travelled to Blundell Park this afternoon looking for their first win of the season.

Both teams had senior players in the starting elevens and it was the visitors who struck first after Ryan Taylor was brought down in the penalty area. Up stepped Drewe Broughton to blast the ball into the back of the net to put the Millers in the lead. Broughton had the ball in the net a few minutes later but it was ruled out for off-side. Jamie Annerson brought off a save from Barry Conlon, tipping the ball round the post while at the other end Leigh Overton caught the ball when Andy Liddell let fly.

Adam Proudlock should have equalised within minutes of the re-start when he turned but fired over from the edge of the area and it was the Millers who doubled their lead. Ryan Taylor played in Mitchell Austin down the left, he beat a defender and rolled the ball to Jason Taylor on the edge of the box and Jaybo put the ball in the net. The Millers went three up when they got a corner and Andy Nicholas chested the ball down and smashed it past Overton. Michael Leary scored a screamer of a goal from twenty-five yards out to give the Mariners their first, followed three minutes later by their second when the Millers were appealing for an off-side and Proudlock rounded Annerson to slot the ball in the net. With seven minutes to go, Stephen Brogan crossed the ball into the area and Grimsby headed out but only as far as the impressive Austin whose powerful shot found the back of the net. In the dying minutes, Annerson had to get down well to save a shot from Leary.
