RUFC - Chairman - naming ground location is 'near'

Rotherham United Chairman, Tony Stewart has told listeners to Radio Sheffield that, under his reign, there will NOT be a move back to Millmoor.

Mr Stewart explained that the club have got to be back in Rotherham in three years from this month and over the last eighteen months he has spent a lot of time working with Rotherham Borough Council. 'A stadium happens once every fifty years or so and is not a quick fix thing. I looked at twenty sites originally and we have two sites short listed.

'The last six weeks have been exciting and the Borough Council want us to have one of the two sites, which we haven't had before. Although I don't want to put a timescale on when we will name the preferred site, I feel, myself, that it could be named in three or four weeks. The time is getting nearer and we are working towards final negotiations. There are so many trip wires including things like ground contamination but we have jumped a lot of hurdles already. I don't want to talk about the cost and I can't reveal how much it will all cost because there is a third party involved. The new stadium will be owned by Rotherham United and any money that is generated will go into the clubs future.

'I do feel that with one of these two sites we have earmarked, I won't be disappointed.'

When Andy Giddings asked what sort of ground Tony Stewart would like he said, 'I like the bowl type of stadium myself, like the Keepmoat.'

The speculation about where the new ground would be situated has been going on since the Millers moved out of Millmoor and into their 'adopted' home of Don Valley and it seems it could go on for another month.
