'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Chairman 'gagging to tell about ground'

Rotherham United Chairman, Tony Stewart told Radio Sheffield that he was excited at having a game to go to at Don Valley last night - though that was before the inept display by his team.

He was asked how, financially, he had been 'hit' by having games postponed and he said, 'When you miss out on six games, three of which were home games, it has an impact but we're an organised club. We hurt but not too deep.'

The question that everyone asks Mr Stewart, and he must be sick to death of answering!, is about the new ground.

'I'm gagging to tell you,' he said. 'I'm very optimistic but until we get the confirmation, which is important, I can't release anything. I can tell you that it's imminent.

'We've done everything we can and we're just waiting for the nod and we are hoping the nod is 'yes'. I would have thought I'd have heard last week but we're into this week and days go by, but one of the guys who makes the decisions isn't in the country. But we are hoping to hear pretty soon.

'To build a new stadium and training ground it will cost in the region of 25m. If we get the nod in the next few days experts tell me it will take a year to get the proper planning and a year to build.

'I was reminded today that a year before I came to this club moves were made to build a new stadium and I've had eighteen months and it has been intense. We've had lots of disappointments on the way and wasted a lot of time with people who've said they want to do a deal and then four months on they've said 'no'. But, I don't believe this will happen in this case. All parties seem happy. But, with all negotiations it's that final confirmation that I'm looking for and we're not far away, believe me.'
