RUFC - League to meet over 'fall out'

The Football League are to hold an emergency meeting today to try and resolve a dispute which could end in the Champions League forming a break-away division.

The meeting is about monies received by clubs, which in effect doubles parachute payments to clubs relegated from the top flight, and, it is understood by the BBC that if the seventy two League clubs reject the new package then the Premier League will stop ALL solidarity payments.

At a meeting last month clubs in the lower two leagues unanimously refused to approve the plans, even though they would boost the money each club receives, and there are the concerns that it would create a second Premier League in all but name, and make it more difficult for clubs currently in Leagues One and Two to climb up the divisions.

For the proposal to be accepted by the Football League as a whole, then half of the Leagues' One and Two clubs have to vote for the proposal.

Chief Executive of the Premier League, Richard Scudamore said, 'It's a genuine attempt to help the Football League, after our International TV rights turned out better than expected and by doing it this way everyone is better off, which includes the non-parachute clubs because they would share in the Football League's TV money.'
