RUFC - Gunning wanted by the Republic of Ireland

Rotherham United came close to being without defender Gavin Gunning for the League Two Play-Off games because he was wanted by the Republic of Ireland U19's for a Youth tournament that starts today in Croatia.

Speaking to Les Payne of The Star, Chief Operating Officer, Paul Douglas said, 'We spoke to the Irish FA (the FAI) and they could not have been more understanding and were very reasonable about it. They took on board our point of view and acknowledged what these play-offs meant to us.

'Naturally, Gavin likes playing for his country, where he is captain, but he has become an important member of the team.'

For me, Gavin Gunning was the star player on Saturday at Aldershot, some of his tackles were very good, one was awesome and he was very solid - we would have missed him.
