'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Alfie on his goal on Saturday

Rotherham United's top scorer, Adam 'Alfie' Le Fondre told Les Payne of The Star that he sensed the goal he scored against Aldershot which puts the Millers in the lead at half-time of the play-off games.

Aldershot's central defender, Aaron Brown, sent the ball back to his 'keeper, Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz, with a back pass that even I could read from the stands. Alfie, with his instinct for goal, was there to intercept the ball, move forward and put it into the back of the net.

'Their central-defender had been in a similar situation at other times during the game and he'd just got rid of it,' Alfie said. 'But this time he took a touch and I thought I'd be prepared for him to back pass it to the 'keeper.

'What was important too was that Ryan Taylor was there closing him down and putting pressure on him. And I thought, this might be the time he's going to back pass and, just in case, I decided to move accordingly. And, it was a gamble that paid off.'

Talking about his goals drying up of late, the former Rochdale forward said, 'It's been frustrating. The chances haven't been falling my way but when it gets like that you have to keep going.'

Alfie says the squad are fully focussed on getting the Millers up and said, 'That's our priority and we still have a lot to do and nobody in our dressing room is taking anything for granted.'

Alfie has admitted that he wants to play at a higher level and he said, 'I joke, when I score in training, that's another £100,000 on my fee!'
