'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC -Head-to-Head v Sheffield United

Rotherham United take on Sheffield United on Saturday at Don Valley in the second of their pre-season friendly games.

The last time the two clubs met in the League was in the Championship in the 2004/5 season. The Blades travelled the short distance (in fact, so short they could have come on the 69 bus!)to Millmoor in December and squandered a two-nil lead to hang on to a point. Michael Tonge put the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time and Paul Shaw doubled the lead two minutes after the restart only for Chris Swailes and Martin McIntosh to pull two back for the Millers. In the game two months later at Bramall Lane, Shaw got the only goal of the game to give the home side all three points.

The Teams that day were -

Blades

Barnes
Kozluk
Harley
Bromby
Morgan
Quinn
Tonge
Jagielka
Johnson (Liddell)
Gray (Beckett)
Shaw (Kabba)

Subs not used

Montgomery
Geary

Millers

Pollitt
Barker
Gilchrist
Swailes (Minto)
Hurst
Vernazza
McLaren
Monkhouse
Campbell-Ryce
Butler
Hoskins

Subs not used

Montgomery
Warne
Garner
Mullin

Referee, P Taylor, booked Bromby, Johnson and Quinn from Sheffield United and McLaren and Vernazza from the Millers.

We have to go back to the 1990's for the last time the Millers beat the Blades - and that was in the League Cup. After a one all draw at Bramall Lane the replay was won one-nil by the Millers at Millmoor.

The biggest win against the Blades was way back, even before I was born (just!) in December 1956 when the Millers travelled to Bramall Lane (and probably did go on the 69 bus - or perhaps it was a tram in those days!) and the game ended 7-2 to Rotherham.

Over the years the Blades have put quite a few past the Millers - the most recent 'big' score was a five-nil tonking at the Lane in September 2003 when Michael Tonge, Paul Peschisolido (2) and Peter Ndlovu (2) scored.
