RUFC - Newey ready for season to start

Rotherham United defender, Tom Newey said that the game against Sheffield United, on Saturday, had been a good work out.

Speaking to MillersPlayer, the former Bury player said, 'I thought we equipped ourselves really well in the first half and had a couple of good chances. I think we probably tired towards the end of the second half which is when they got a foothold on the game and got a couple of goals.

'It`s been a tough pre-season but I`m enjoying it. We`ve been concentrating on the fitness work which is the main priority at this stage. It`s not all long running these days it`s more scientific and geared towards match situations. But, it`s the games what you need because that`s where you get the communication with your team mates and get the minutes under your belt before the season starts. I`ve played with Fenners (Nick Fenton) and Cressy (Ryan Cresswell) before.

'I`ve been around for quite a while in the lower leagues and I think I know what it takes to get out of it and I think we`ve got a very good chance with the players we`ve got and I`m looking forward to the season.`

Asked if it helps looking up and seeing Adam Le Fondre up front, Tom said, 'Yes of course it helps, every team wants a goal scorer. There`s no doubt that Alfie can play higher and I`m sure he`ll get the chance but we just want him to stop here as long he can. He loves scoring goals whether it`s in training or whatever and he`s a natural goal scorer.`
