RUFC - Lids on Reserve win

Rotherham United's Reserve team coach, Andy Liddell was pleased with the two-nil win yesterday afternoon against Nottingham Forest, which kept the Millers in top spot in the totesport.com league, though he did say it wasn't all about the winning.

Speaking to MillersPlayer after the game, where Tom Pope and Tom Elliott scored, Liddell said, 'Reserve football is mostly about the performance and especially against a Nottingham Forest Under eighteen squad who I thought were excellent. They have some very good players and the game was played at a high tempo and it was a good game for our lads. So, it was a good performance and a good win against a very difficult team.

'We have the problem where we have a big squad and we've got first team players playing in the Reserve team which isn't ideal for them. But, they need games although a lot of teams take the view that reserve team football isn't for first team players, I disagree. I think they should play in the Reserves because it keeps their match fitness up, keeps them sharp and ready to go in the first team. But, it is difficult - though not for me because it means the Reserve team is very good - but not everyone wants to play in the Reserves. All I ask is that they try their best, work very hard and apply themselves and do what they're good at and they seem to be doing that.'
