RUFC - Moore 'pathetic defending'

Rotherham United Manager, Ronnie Moore called his back four 'pathetic` after the three-one loss to Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium last night.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield, Moore said, 'If you defend like we did in the first half you aren`t going to win games. We couldn`t handle their number ten, the big lad has used all his weight but we knew what was coming and we gifted them two goals. It was rank bad defending.

'We got ourselves back in the game with a free kick and we changed the shape and side in the second half and I was just waiting for another equaliser. We were looking for Alf (Adam Le Fondre) and one`s fell straight for him and they swear blind their lad has hand-balled it on the line but nobody`s seen it. And that was frustrating because it was a great opportunity for us and they went down the other end and whereas it could have been two-two it was three-one. I didn`t see the handball incident but when everyone has appealed then you know something`s wrong. The referee is stood closer than the linesman and he`s looking at the linesman for the decision when it was his decision to make.`

The Millers went three-up front in the second half and Moore said, 'They played with the diamond shape and we were being over run in midfield. We asked the two wide men to tuck in but they didn`t tuck in enough so we took one winger off, went with three up, put Randall in there and you could see the quality he has on the ball. His passing ability is second to none, though he still makes the odd little mistake round the box. But, it doesn`t really matter about the six up front it`s the back four that were found wanting. At this present time we are finding it difficult to keep clean sheets and I`ve told them I`ve had enough and I`ll try and do a bit of business this week. Ryan Cresswell has no chance of being fit for the weekend

'And, I didn`t take Johnny Mullins off because he was injured, I took him off because he was having as stinker. He couldn`t handle the number ten today, he`s battered us. John Mullins has been our most consistent player over the last few weeks but, unfortunately, it just didn`t work out for him on the night and hopefully he can put that right. But, there are other areas of the back four that worry me. If we concede goals like we`ve conceded today then we aren`t going to get a top three spot.`
