'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Jim happy with the pitch

Rotherham United`s head grounds man, Jim Davison says that, after the bad winter and the heavy use it`s had, the pitch at Don Valley is holding up well.

On Tuesday night, some of us were a bit perplexed to see that there were rugby markings on the pitch again and it appears that Sheffield Eagles played there on Sunday and will play further cup games at Don Valley, although their league games will be played at Bramall Lane.

Also, on the Saturday`s that the Millers aren`t playing, there is amateur football played but Jim doesn`t see a problem with this.

Speaking to The Advertiser, he said, 'This winter has been a bad one and we are trying to look after every blade of grass and I think we`ve done a remarkable job with the conditions we`ve had.

'There are better pitches around at the moment but they don`t host the amount of games ours does and we have to factor in, not only that, but also the weather we keep getting thrown at us. The pitch might not look nice but its fine and I can assure everyone it played perfectly the other night. It`s starting to look a bit bare in places but we are at the end of February and I`m happy with how the pitch is.

'On Sunday there was eighteen millimetres of rain and they played rugby on it, so, for us to play there on Tuesday and win, I`m chuffed with that.

'By the time the game comes tomorrow it will have had a rest and we`ll be working as hard as we can. So, hopefully, you will see a different pitch tomorrow.`

I think a lot of us were disappointed because we'd only said the weekend before how good the pitch was looking
