RUFC - Ex-Miller expects us to finish in top seven

RUFC - Ex-Miller expects us to finish in top seven

Rotherham United were one of the favourites to go up automatically before the season began. And, for the first half of this season it looked odds on that we were going to do that. Then, winter set in and we started to have a bit of a wobble and gaps opened and other teams wandered in and out of those top seven places that count.

Now, the Millers are down in tenth place, nineteen points away from top of the league, Chesterfield but only four points away from Gillingham, who lie in seventh place at the moment.

It`s certainly going to be a dog fight at this business end of the season up there and, although the hopes have faded a little, there is still a light there and there`s always hope.

We`ve really got to win our remaining games, three of which are long away trips, the first that is on Saturday to Cheltenham, who are sitting mid-table. Good Friday sees us play at Northampton, who themselves could still get dragged into the relegation places, and the last away game is the farthest at Aldershot. We also have three games at Don Valley, where we haven`t been doing well of late.

Former Miller, Rich Finney, recently spoke to Radio Sheffield saying, 'After last season`s trip to Wembley for the play-off final, the club was looking to go straight up this time around and, to some extent, it still is. The effort is there but we are making it difficult for ourselves by not winning games that we should win.

'There has been a change of manager, which was probably right at the time, and now we have to see where that takes us

'The league table is close and if any of the top ten manage to win four-or-five games between now and the end of the season they could be in the top three.`

Asked where he expects the Millers to finish, Rich confidently said, 'Sixth place.`

I like his confidence and hope he`s right.

It won`t matter what anyone else does for the next six games but we know we have to win them - even if it`s a goal in time added on that comes off an opposition defenders backside - three points is vital to the cause from each game now.
