RUFC - Should Alfie start on Friday?

RUFC - Should Alfie start on Friday?

Rotherham United's former Manager, Ronnie Moore, was the first to do it and then caretaker Manager, Andy Liddell, did the same. Now, new Manager, Andy Scott, has done it.

What's that? Dropped top scorer, Adam Le Fondre.

Moore dropped the striker for the game at Bradford City at the beginning of March and when Liddell and Paul Warne took over Alfie started on the bench for the game against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank coming off the bench on sixty-five minutes to replace Ian Thomas-Moore. He came off the bench for the next game against Shrewsbury, scoring the Millers consolation goal in a three-one loss at Don Valley and he started the next game against Morecambe, dropping to the bench again at Cheltenham.

On Saturday Andy Scott started Alfie on the bench, bringing him on twenty minutes from the end to replace Mark Bradley.

Now, I'm not a manager but I'd like to make a couple of observations. In the last few games of last season (around this time) Alfie didn't seem to be his usual lively self and, to me, it seem to take him a while to get into games. Thinking of that putting him on for the last twenty or so minutes isn't perhaps a good thing. Against Cheltenham and on Saturday against Hereford I think both games were crying out for a goal poacher, which, Alfie is. Personally, I'd have had him on earlier, especially against Cheltenham.

It just seems a bit strange to me that, when we are crying out for goals, our top scorer isn't featuring.
