RUFC - Jack Shaw RIP

Rotherham Vital have heard of the recent death of former Miller Jack Shaw

Jack, who in his time at Millmoor played at inside forward, outside right and left half, was one of the best goal scorers the Millers have ever had.

Born in Doncaster he joined the Millers in 1945 making nearly two hundred and eighty appearances for the club in his seven seasons and scoring one hundred and forty-two league and cup goals. In the 1950/1 season he scored thirty-seven league goals and nine cup goals which included five in an FA Cup game at Darlington, that the Millers won seven-two, which was the season in which he also got five hat-tricks. Being one of those players who seemed to be able to time his jumping to perfection, it wasn`t surprising that most of his goals came from headers.

Jack moved to rivals Sheffield Wednesday in 1953, which was said to be much against his will.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jack a few years ago at a book signing and he took time out to talk to my young son and answer his many questions.

Our condolences go out to Jack`s family.
