Rotherham United`s former home, Millmoor, is to get a place in the history books when the Millers Community Sports Trust being involved in a new project looking at the history surrounding the ground.
The Sports Trust has been given £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery to fund this latest project which follows on from the success of From Coal to Goal where the Trust looked at the links between football and history in the town during the 1940`s and 1950`s.
Memories of Millmoor will get first hand accounts from fans, club staff, players and officials about the ground and history while teaching young people in the area of Masbrough about how the area grew up around the stadium.
Speaking to The Advertiser, the Head of Yorkshire and the Humber`s Heritage Lottery Fund, Fiona Spiers, said, 'Millmoor Football ground has played a vital role in the history of Rotherham United and this project will preserve this unique heritage by bringing its stories to life while letting everyone get involved by sharing their past.`
Head of the Community Sports Trust, Dale Spilby said, 'This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture and preserve the memories, heritage and inception of Rotherham United and the iconic Millmoor ground.
'The eighteen month project will lead us perfectly into the new community stadium.`
The project, which will produce learning resources, including a CD of songs and chants, will be deposited in the Rotherham Library Archives so that it can be shared with the wider public.
Organisers will also try to create new songs to capture the history of the club.
Anyone wanting to get involved in this project can do so by emailing community@rotherhaunited.net or phoning 01709 827767
