RUFC - Scott after last nights game

Rotherham United Manager, Andy Scott said that he thought it was a good test for his side last night against Scunthorpe at Don Valley.

After the two-nil loss, Scott spoke to MillersPlayer saying, 'Scunthorpe are a good passing side who have just come down from the Championship. We played a bit of a different formation and, in fairness, we were going to change it halfway through the first half, but I thought it would be a good test for the lads on the pitch to see if they could work out for themselves how to cope with it. And, it made the point clearer in the second half when we did change it because we were much the better side. Our back four went higher up the pitch, we got closer to the ball and had more energy. It was a good workout.

'We`re looking at different areas that we can play and I didn`t feel we effected the game in the wide areas and didn`t keep the ball well enough in midfield and weren`t playing forward enough. But, after changing it around a little bit for the second half, I thought we were a real threat. It`s something we`d looked at in training but until you play against a decent side you don`t know how effective it is. And it shows that we also have options.

'I thought that both Danny (Schofield) and Ben (Pringle) were playing too deep in the first half and playing too many sideways balls too close to each other. They`ve both got plenty of energy and knowing that Jaybo (Jason Taylor) is protecting them behind, when we changed it they were able to get forward.

'We do need to be more tenacious in the tackle in the midfield area and we`ve still got to work on that a little bit. The runs up front were excellent and I was much happier with the second half and it was a good lesson to learn.`

Talking about the fitness of the squad, Scott said, 'The fitness is excellent. Even against Sheffield Wednesday we saw that the last ten or fifteen minutes we were still strong and powerful. Tonight we went forward in waves every time the ball got cleared we won it back and went again, so fitness wise we were excellent, given the fact that for the first forty-five minutes we were chasing after it for long periods.`
