Rotherham United Manager, Andy Scott had nothing but praise for his opposite number at Don Valley tomorrow, John Still.
Still is in his second spell as Manager of Dagenham and Redbridge and began his management career in 1986 with Maidstone United. He then moved to the Daggers before spending a year with Peterborough, did a spot of coaching at Lincoln City before moving to Barnet in 1997. He became assistant manager with Bristol Rovers before moving back to Dagenham in 2004.
Speaking to MillersPlayer, Scott said, 'He`s done an outstanding job there and no one can describe in words how he`s done it on the budget he`s had.
'He always finds these gems out of non-league or lower which is amazing really that the levels he goes too to pick up players. He gets lads who have been released from clubs and he manages to turn them round and revives their careers. And he works with them and makes things simple for them and players enjoy playing for him which is why they are successful. They were unfortunate last year to go down but I`m sure they will be challenging this year and will be another strong team we have to play against.`
Asked if he was surprised that Still hadn`t gone to manage a club in a higher league, Scott said, 'Certainly he wanted to finish the job at Dagenham when they got promoted into the league and then they went up. Then last year, he`s probably the only manager who can get relegated and know that his job`s going to be a hundred per cent safe! And rightly so. He deserves the opportunity to stay there and keep working and doing the job he`s done because clearly he knows what he`s doing.
'It`s a stigma against lower league managers because the big clubs in the Championship sometimes don`t want to take a chance of a manager who`s been there and done it and understands what it`s all about and can work on a budget. It`s not glitzy and glamour - it`s not a Paolo Di Canio, it`s not a Paul Ince who`s played at the highest level in the country and international football. It`s disappointing because you see a lot of young mangers and players at this level who are needing a chance and deserve a chance but they don`t get it.
'But, you keep going and plugging away and John is obviously happy where he is and he`ll continue to do his work there.`
