'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Scott 'we've got character to come back'

Rotherham United Manager, Andy Scott said that it was a 'fantastic' result for his side today.

Speaking after the two-one win over Barrow in the FA Cup, Scott told Radio Sheffield, 'The character of the whole squad was magnificent and we knew we'd have to dig in. Everyone who was involved today was outstanding.

'The pitch is awful and they tried every trick in the book, like time wasting after twenty-five minutes, going down injured and pretending they are getting kicked in the head when they're not. But, you know when you come here that you are going to have to face a battle and stand up and be counted. People will look at the result and say 'they won at a non-league side' but it was more than that and anyone who has been here, played here and know what it's about will know that that is one hell of a result.

'It wasn't pretty but it wasn't conducive to pretty football today. The new FA Cup ball is like a beach ball and it's becoming more and more ridiculous as the years go on. We trained with them this week and it's amazing how much different they are from league balls. That's not an excuse, that's a fact. But we had to cope with it.

'They (Barrow) put us under pressure from set-pieces and what have you and we let a poor goal in. But we stood firm and in the second half, when we got it to our wide players and our front players, we put them under pressure and they weren't able to cope with it. What was disappointing was that before that, we had opportunities to put balls into the box from wide a lot earlier, a lot more often and we didn't do that. We know we've got goalscorers and we need to put teams under pressure by putting it in the box and we did that a lot more in the second half and as soon as we got the goal we were in the ascendancy. And we weren't happy to settle for a draw we wanted the wind. We didn't want a replay and we knew, once we got the equaliser, they were going to get a bit frustrated and a bit worried about what would happen and we kept on putting pressure on them and got the penalty.

'We had chances in the first half and maybe should have done better with a couple of them. When you look at the amount of shots we've had on target it will be a handful but we put them under a lot of pressure and came away with the win. If we'd come away with the loss, it would have been a difficult pill to swallow but, on the other hand, we've come away with a lot of confidence and belief in ourselves that we've got the character to come back in very difficult circumstances.'

Yes, on reflection it was a good win today - but let's get this into prospective. This was a team who boasted about having Andy Nicholas on the bench!
