'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Newey 'I'm just following instructions'

Rotherham United defender, Tom Newey told David Beddows of The Advertiser that he is determined to get his place back in the starting eleven.

Since Jon Harley joined on loan from Notts County, the twenty-nine year old former Bury player hasn`t had much of a look in lately, but, with Harley not being allowed to play in the Cup game on Saturday, Tom was back in the starting eleven.

In recent weeks, Tom has been getting a bit of 'stick` from the crowd and, asked if he thought it was fair, he replied, 'Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just try and do what the manager has asked me to do and try and play the way they want me to play. If that`s not pleasing for the fans then that`s not really my problem. I`m just following instructions.`

Talking about the rest of the season, he went onto say, 'I thought I started the season pretty well but the manager thought I had a dip in form and brought Jon in.

'I had a chance in the cup at Barrow and thought I did well but the manager decided to go with Jon again but then I came in on Saturday and, against a tricky winger, I thought I held my own.`

Tom had started fifteen games for the Millers before Jon Harley arrived and he says, 'Jon has been a good player, and still is, but I`ve played a lot of games myself and back myself against most people in this division. But, it`s about who the manager chooses and when Jon has the shirt then it`s about waiting patiently.

'I`d like to be involved tomorrow (against Hereford) but, it`s not down to me. I want to be playing football and, at my age, I need to be playing. I`ve played a lot of games in my career and have been in decent teams which have been to finals and that`s what I want. I don`t want to be sitting on the bench. But, it`s up to me to keep working hard and hope the manager sees that.`

Hmm a case of 'it's not my fault he told me to do it'?
