Rotherham United and the rest of League One and Two have found out that the Johnstone's Paint Trophy will be around for a little while yet.
The Football League Trophy, that originally began life as the Associate Members' Cup way back in 1983, has been around, as the Football League Trophy, for nineteen years. It has been sponsored by the likes of Freight Rover, Sherpa Van, Leyland Daf, Autoglass, Auto Windscreens and LDV Vans until 2006 when Johnstone's Paint took over. The Millers themselves won the competition when it was the Auto Windscreen Shield in 1995/6 season - who can forget Nigel Jemson wandering around with the shield that looked nearly as big as him!
It's been announced today that Johnstone's Paints have extended their association with the Football League until 2014/15 season with Football League Chairman Greg Clarke saying that he was delighted to have extended the sponsorship with Johnstone's Paint.
Speaking to the Football League's Official Site, Mr Clark said, 'They have worked extremely hard to help us raise this competition's public profile and popularity with supporters. I look forward to further strengthening our relationship during this next stage of our partnership.'
Johnstone's Paint Marketing Director, Jason Metcalf, said, 'More than five million fans have watched Johnstone's Paint Trophy matches, in grounds and on television, since the sponsorship began and Johnstone's Paint has also engaged with up to two million people through numerous community projects. It has been one of our biggest success stories and we couldn't be happier to be reinforcing our relationship with the clubs and their legions of fans.'
