'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - New York?

I can`t lie about this, I was less than thrilled when I heard the new stadium name announced. I was under instructions from my brother and brother in law, as they live out of town, to let them know ASAP! I sent texts to both and both answered "What?" I had to explain the history behind the name etc and settled back in baffled resignation.

Wait a minute! What if some company has "New York" name and now wants to know who Rotherham United are? For instance, what about The New York Pastrami Co (I made that up by the way) wanting to see their name on the stadium or on shirts. I`m not in anyway suggesting getting rid of Parkgate Retail World but just using marketing options to discuss.

Take that a step further. Many years ago the steel company I worked for supplied to a project in Brighton which was UK head office for American Express. No one had heard of them or what the heck a "credit card" was. (How times have changed.) They`ve seized the opportunity to have their name on the ground. What if someone like this has heard of the ground name (Yes, my US friends have e-mailed to ask if this was my soccer team?) and are planning a UK venture and this could bring some commerce to the area.

Far fetched I know, however, this naming could have been a marketing master stroke and we cynics could be left eating humble pie.

Ed Note: Surely that should be Pumpkin pie???

Well the name has certainly gone global and got people talking!

I tried to think of products/itens that wouldn't compromise our current sponsors. I couldn't help the shirt reference, however, there will only ever be Pukka pies at Millmoor oops New York ground

But will they start putting pumpkin in them???
