'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - 'Gareth should have said he wasn't fit'

Rotherham United winger Gareth Evans was withdrawn fifteen minutes into the second half against Swindon Town on Saturday and there were some people questioning his fitness.

Gareth has been out of the team for a while with an injury that he picked up in November against Bradford City and Millers Manager, Andy Scott, was asked about his fitness.

'Gareth has trained very well and last Thursday he said he was one hundred per cent fit.

'He trained Friday as well and it came to the game and said that he was struggling with his injury during the game.

'I think it's a case of making sure he's right mentally as well as physically because if he doesn't feel he's right to play then there's no point in playing him. But, we can only go on what we see and what he tells us. He didn't play at all well last week and we are attributing that to the fact that his thigh was still tight but, from our point of view, he should have made it clear either earlier in the game that he's struggling or before the game.

'He hasn't trained this week yet. He did some running yesterday and we will assess him again today.

'It's another lesson to be learnt and an opportunity to say that we need eleven players playing at their full potential every week to get a result.'

Perhaps it's me, but isn't that what the medical team's there for, to make sure players are fit before they play?
