RUFC - Scott 'Warney was outstanding'

Join The Vital Debate

Rotherham United veteran (though, he plays anything like that!), Paul Warne made his first appearance of the season this evening when he came off the bench in the second half to replace, Shaun Harrad.

Message boards and social networking sites immediately 'lit up' with the 'why's? And the grumbles at the manager, and Andy Scott said after the game that he thought the thirty-eight year old was 'outstanding'

Speaking to Radio Sheffield Scott explained, 'Shaun was feeling a bit leggy and there wasn't really a spark there, which is understandable because this is as many games as he's played for a long time. But we wanted to get an hour out of him and see whether that was good enough.

'Warney came on and was outstanding and worked his socks off. And, we got into the game a little bit more and put them under pressure.

'He was desperate to come on - he thinks he can play for another five years! - but that's what he's like. He's got enthusiasm and yes, he makes mistakes, but he doesn't care! He's made a living out of working very hard and being a fantastic professional and he put in a good performance today.

'The aim was to win the game and we very nearly did that.'

Speaking about the other changes this evening - Michael Raynes and Lewis Grabban in for Kieron Cadogan and Richard Naylor, Scott said, 'Michael Raynes came in but it was a close call between him and Cressy (Ryan Cresswell) but it was really just the fact that Raynesy had had more game time so I thought it was best to put him in. He did very well but Cressy was unlucky to miss out.

'Kieron got cramp on Saturday and I was going to put him on the bench but we felt that if we were going to get more games out of him in quick succession then this one was just a bit too far for him. Grabs has been chomping on the bit to get involved and he was a danger in the second half and had a terrific chance with a header, that you would have expected him to score, I mean, if he hits the target it's a goal.'
