'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Warney 'I just want to play'

Rotherham United midfielder, Paul Warne was probably a bit surprised when he got the call to go on the field on Tuesday night at Gillingham.

Well, I was a bit mystified, and not being at Priestfield, I immediately got a few texts saying things like 'Warney? Shakes head in disbelief`!

But, we were all wrong it seems, as I`m told he added a bit of liveliness to the game and made a bit of a nuisance of himself. In fact, The Advertiser said this

Paul Warne: 38 going on 18. The veteran came on, stretched defenders and made a bit of a nuisance of himself. If you could bottle his desire and appetite for the game you`d be quids in

Speaking to David Beddows of The Advertiser Warney said, 'The gaffer told us all to warm up and then he pointed at me. Normally when he does that it`s to tell me to tell the bloke further down the bench that he`s coming on. I asked 'Ben Pringle?` and he said, 'no, you.`

'I went on, ran around a bit and perhaps thirty minutes is about right. But, I just want to play.

'I still train really hard and still look after myself and play in the reserves every week. So, I`m always there or thereabouts but, unfortunately, I`m in a squad where most people are better than me and that`s a sad reality. But it was nice to play and after the game I rang my wife and my Mum and Dad to tell them.`

Manager, Andy Scott referred to Warney as it being like having an hyperactive child in the squad and Warney said, 'Scotty inherited me and kindly he has let me be involved in the coaching squad. I`m part of the team and I help the strikers and the injured lads, going to the gym with them.

'It would be nice to be around next season which would be my tenth season with the club. I`d be open minded whether that be as a player or in some other capacity. If it`s helping the Youth team or in the club shop I`d just like to help. I`ve settled in the area and have no intentions of moving back to Norfolk so I`d like to stay but, you just don`t know in football.`
