'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Evans 'plenty of pride today'

Rotherham United Manager, Steve Evans said he will take the positives from the three-one loss at Greenhous Meadow this afternoon

Speaking to MillersPlayer after the loss, Evans said, 'For forty-four minutes we were exceptionally delighted. One up, should have could have been three up, we make a mistake and they get the goal. Then they get a goal early in the second half and for ten or fifteen minutes we lost our shape a little bit. We got back in the game with a couple of half chances, Cressy should have hit the target from a header and for the third goal Johnny (Mullins) tries a bit of a gamble and the boys turned him and it's killed us a bit. But it was an injustice to go in one each after the first half.

'I've told the boys in there some of the lads here are very fit and very focused and will be part of it while some of the lads are not fit and haven't got enough focus and won't be a part of it. But that's not criticising anyone. I've just praised them in there for the commitment and passions we've delivered but the quality in the last third today wasn't good enough for me.

'There was plenty of pride from the performance today. People will look from a distance and say it was Shrewsbury's normal business but it wasn't. They know they were in a game today and I think they will say they were fortunate if they're being honest. a real intensity, a real passion, a real drive

'I'm really disappointed with the result when you see that a couple of others have slipped up. We need to keep our drive and determination because point wise we still aren't out of this. We've three games I expect us to do well in with this one always going to be the hardest. If we win those three games and other continue to wobble - well, listen I might be living in fairy land but football is fairy land isn't it.

'If the benchmark to get promoted is Shrewsbury then get ready for the coming season.

'We've had a fantastic following today and they've got behind us and they can get ready for some exciting times. I'm quickly making assessments which we will be doing along the way and I've told the players that and that I was delighted with the commitment but disappointed with the quality. Mine and Paul's teams play with a real intensity, a real passion, a real drive which we've got that in some areas. We've got some lead men but we know we need to add players. We've now got three big games coming up where players are playing to show the type of performance and abilities to move into the new stadium because that's where the dream is. The supporters have seen a real passion and performance today, not to say that that hasn't been there before, but they've seen the type of passion the players are going to have to display and they are going to play like that every week with that pride to wear a Rotherham United shirt.'

Steve Evans showed emotion himself today after the Millers scored in the opening minutes, he ran on the pitch. ''Some managers do it, some managers stand with their arms folded,' Evans said.

'I said to the Rotherham United fans, when I came in, that they are going to get pride and passion and I know the type of players they need and I know the name of some of the players they need and it's going to be a very exciting summer.'
