'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Warney looking forward to the future

Rotherham United's Paul Warne might have hung up his boots but he is looking forward to his new role as Development Coach, although he says he doesn't really know what his job will be.

Admitting that his final game on Saturday was a bit of a tear jerker, Warney told MillersPlayer, 'It was emotional but I think it would have been a lot more emotional if it had been at Millmoor. When I left before I knew it was my last game in a Rotherham shirt and it did upset me and today was just the same. The lads had made a joke about it and I told the gaffer that if I was to score today I would jump over the railings, go into the crowd, get someone else's jacket and just walk off - I'd have took the red card! And Alec Denton had a great opportunity to give it me, unfortunately he didn't and I've told him I will haunt him for the rest of his footballing days.

'With the illnesses and injuries this week the gaffer has been keeping the team a secret but when I found out I was on the bench I thought I had a slim chance to get on. Then I thought Mitch (Rose) might take my place but the gaffer put me on. Then I was on the left wing! But it was enjoyable . My son said I looked really quick when I ran off the pitch, which I thank him for! But it was nice because my family were here today.

Thirty-nine yesterday, Warney first joined the Millers in 1999 from Wigan Athletic and made well over two hundred appearances for the club before moving on to Oldham and then Yeovil. In 2009, the midfielder returned to Rotherham making another thirty-five appearances, his last being on Saturday when he came off the bench with three minutes to go to say a fond farewell to the Millers fans.

Although, it won't be a farewell as Warney has been given a new job at the club where he will be involved in the first team coaching, reserves and youth squad.

'I think I've got my finger in a lot of pies,' Warney said about his new role. 'which is good. The gaffer has been brilliant with me. He's adopted me which he didn't have to do and I get on with him and I'm looking forward to the future and the new stadium.'

Asked what his new job will entail, Warney answered, 'Well apart from being the best member of staff at the club and most decisions being made by me I'm not one hundred per cent sure! I'll probably go back to being like the fitness coach, do a bit with the strikers, do a bit with the development of the Youth team and I'm going through all my coaching badges.'
