RUFC - Evans had tough decisions to make

Join The Vital Debate

Rotherham United Manager, Steve Evans says it was a tough decision that he and his number two, Paul Raynor had to make about letting players go.

Speaking to MillersPlayer, the Millers boss said, 'There were some really good footballers in that group and some real good guys like Danny Harrison and Tom Newey well, I could name them all. They were tough decisions but we have to make the tough ones as well as the easy ones.'

Speaking about the two players he's made available for transfer, Michael Raynes and Jamie Annerson, Evans said, 'I think Michael was surprised. I think he understood what we said we were trying to do and he accepts that. But we shall treat him with the utmost respect and he will be treated like the rest of the group and there will be no training with the kids like before. I'm sure there will be clubs looking at Michael.

'There was interest for Jamie before the end of the season from a club from the Conference National who will possibly take him and we are sure that will happen for him.'

While saying he expects both Jason Taylor and Gareth Evans to sign their contract extensions, Evans said he was also going to have a conversation with Southampton Manager, Nigel Adkins about Sam Hoskins, but said his focus was on permanent signings and not loan players.

'We are concentrating on who is available to us on permanent signings because I feel that loan signings are really for filling in the gaps. We want our own players. We want our fans to recognise the players and vice versa we want the players to recognise the fans. So, in an ideal world we won't be having loan players but that's not to say there won't be room in the squad for a season long term loan player, but that will probably be a decision to be made in July.'
