RUFC - Goal-line technology on the way

RUFC - Goal-line technology on the way

Goal-line technology has been approved by the International Football Association Board in Zurich with two systems (Hawk-eye and GoalRef) passing FIFA`s criteria.

With the Premier League saying they want to start using the system as soon as possible recent reports say it could be in use mid-way through next season. Now, hold on a minute, if you are or aren`t a 'yes` when it comes to goal-line technology, I don`t really see how it can be introduced part way through a season/competition. What about the decisions that have gone before? Truthfully, my mind is still not quite made up if I am 'for` technology in football - but I can`t see it making a lot of difference if it didn`t start until the 2013/14 season. In my mind starting midway through a season is the same as changing the rules, which I`m sure wouldn`t be allowed.

And with goal-line technology will we lose the 'essence` of the game or is football worth that much money now that human error shouldn`t be allowed? Will it make football more of a science than a pleasure - will it change how we watch football? I think it will change all the 'hard luck` stories and the talking points which, in a way, have become football fairy stories, of the past.

But, just how frustrating is it to see a perfect goal not given for your team? We`ve all seen it happen so this simple thing, which has been used in other sports for some years now, would outlaw that.

Will it stop at goal-line technology or is this the beginning of the end of officials making decisions? Saying that, why one referee and two linesman (sorry referee`s assistants) can`t see when a player is obviously taking a throw-in some five yards from where the ball went out I really don`t know! And, for instance, will we start to use these 'camera`s` for penalty claims, offside`s on the lead up to a goal, shirt pulling in the box? If not, should we - or is it just going to get out of hand?

And what about us, the humble fans of League football? Do we get a say in all this or, as so often, are we the forgotten people and clubs? The powers-who-be have tried everything else out on 'us` so why not this?

Well, whatever you think, technology is a wonderful thing - but then, so is hindsight.
