RUFC - A Look Back at Last Season - February

RUFC - A Look Back at Last Season - February

February began with the Millers in thirteenth place in League Two and with striker, Lewis Grabban, having his goal against Shrewsbury Town nominated for the Mitre Goal of the Year at the Football League Awards 2012.

After Manager, Andy Scott and Players Facilities Manager, Dave Fellows, saying that they were expecting the game on Saturday against Torquay at Don Valley to go ahead, the game was called off on the Friday after minus temperatures made the pitch unplayable.

Meanwhile, Andy Scott said that the fans negativity doesn't help anyone, saying, 'As a manager criticism is something you deal with and I`d rather take it than everyone else so the players can concentrate on their game. I do understand the fans' frustrations but we all need to be in the same boat and pushing forwards.'

Before the next game, away at Southend, striker Shaun Harrad joined on a months emergency loan from Bury.

After a 'will-it/won't it' go ahead, the Friday night game at a very, very cold Roots Hall did go ahead with the Millers bringing all three points home with them. The Shrimpers fans had helped clear the pitch (unfortunately for away fans, most of it seemed to have been cleared into the away end) and the referee allowed the game to be played. New boy Shaun Harrad put the Millers ahead on nine minutes and a goal from Alex Revell seven minutes from time made sure of the win.

In his post-match interview, Andy Scott said, that it was a deserved win for the Millers saying that it was 'a difficult night for the players in terms of the surface and the team we were playing against but we came through with flying colours.'

Scott also had a word for the one hundred and twenty travelling fans saying, 'The fans were magnificent. All the lads went over to them at the end because they appreciate the fact that its Friday night and its a long journey. It`s particularly cold and they weren`t sure if the game was going to be on. They are the life and soul of this football club.'

Rotherham United were short listed for the Coca-Cola Community Club of the Year.

The following Tuesday saw Accrington Stanley at Don Valley and it a game dominated by the Millers, it was a penalty on twenty-eight minutes taken by Shaun Harrad that won the game.

Andy Scott had nothing but praise for his side after the win saying that the back five was excellent and looked strong and organised.

The following afternoon the Reserves lost three-nil to Hull City at Roundwood. The Millers Assistant Manager, Darren Patterson said that although he has to give credit to Hull City in the first half of the Reserve game yesterday, there were lots of positives to take from the Millers performance.

The club had sent out 'Welcome Back to Rotherham' packs to existing season ticket holders which included an invitation to book a presentation showing a 'virtual fly-through' of the New York Stadium.

The Millers next game was away at the Pirelli Stadium against Burton Albion. Five minutes before half-time Calvin Zola put the home side in front and it took a 'bundle over the line' from Shaun Harrad against his former team on fifty-five minutes to rescue a point for the Millers.

Andy Scott was disappointed with his Millers side in the first half but said it was a 'good second half'.

The Millers had played three games in a week and got seven points out of nine so I suppose it was a good week all said.

Marcus Marshall's loan spell with Macclesfield was extended until the end of the season while Andy Scott was hoping to keep Shaun Harrad for longer than the original months' loan.

The Millers made the long trip to Gillingham for their next Tuesday night game and came back with a point and a clean sheet as neither side could put the ball into the back of the net.

Andy Scott was happy with both the point and clean sheet but had special praise for Paul Warne, who came off the bench a few minutes into the second half, to make his first appearance for the first team of the season. 'Warney was outstanding,' Scott said, 'he worked his socks off.'

Meanwhile, midfielder, Mark Bradley, who played left-back in the game, thought they should have come away with all three points saying 'we dominated the second half.'

There was news for the fans who joined in the 'Buy a Brick Scheme' in 2005. The Board had decided to put a commemorative plaque up at the new ground and were encouraging people who had sent money for a brick, which never emerged, to fill in forms so they would, at last, see their names up in lights.

The Reserves went to Billingham where they beat Hartlepool Reserves one-nil with a goal from Tom Newey.

Millers 'keeper, Jamie Annerson, joined Bradford City on loan.

The next news came from Former Millers Chairman Anton Johnson who has written a book called ' Bungs, Boardrooms and Butchery' in which he says he 'wants to put the record straight' about what happened in his time at Millmoor.

Bristol Rovers were the last team to visit Don Valley in February and a goal from Andy Dorman in two minutes of added time at the end of the game, won the game for the visitors, looking like the Millers play-off hopes were at an end.

Vital Rotherham Man of the Match - Sam Wood

After the game, Andy Scott questioned what it was about Don Valley saying, 'I honestly don't know what it is about playing here but they've got to get over it very quickly because we 've got five games here next month. And we've got to do better than that and pick up points.'

Goalkeeper, Andy Warrington, began the game on Saturday for the first time in four months and said it was 'great' to get ninety minutes under his belt. He also said, 'I love it at this club.'

Vital Rotherham Man of the Month - both Alex Revell and Sam Wood were voted Man of the Match in two games this month

Having won two games, drawn two games and lost one game, the Millers ended February in two places better than when the month started, in eleventh spot.
