'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Evans on Sharps as Skipper

Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans said that it has been a long process choosing a captain for the coming season.

The club asked the supporters to help by e-mailing them with their choice of skipper from four nominated players - Sharpsy, Johnny Mullins, Nicky Hunt and Kari Arnason - which was to make up fifty per cent of the voting while each of the members of the football staff also had input.

Speaking to MillersPlayer after the appointment, the Millers Boss said, 'It's taken a long time and I've been thinking about it all through pre-season but have finally decided that the team and club captain will be Ian Sharps with Johnny Mullins as vice-captain.

'We've taken into consideration a lot of the supporters views which has been invaluable to us.

'There was a case for Johnny Mullins to continue as skipper and he's done nothing wrong and a big case for both Nicky Hunt and Arnason but we wanted someone who had led a team to promotion which Ian did last year. Since he joined the group I've looked for a leader in the dressing room and someone who the lads look up to and Sharpsy is one of those guys.'

Saying Ian was surprised when he found out the managers decision, Evans said, 'He asked me why and I gave him some basic principles and he added to them and he's got his views on what a captain should be.'
