RUFC - Evans has 'real confidence' in his namesake

Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans had nothing but praise for his surnamed namesake Gareth Evans after the game on Saturday.

Gareth scored two of the four goals on Saturday against his former club and the Millers Boss told Les Payne of The Star that he knew, before the game, that he`d have a big part to play.

'The lad wears his heart on his sleeve and the whole bench was delighted for him when he scored.`

But it could have been different for the twenty-four year old, who joined the Millers in the summer of 2011, when a bid from a Championship club came in for him last week which was turned down by the Millers. 'I spoke to the Chairman about the offer,` Steve Evans said, 'and he supported me and we turned it down.

'I`ve got real confidence in Gareth Evans and when he`s at it, he`s a proper handful. He`s fit but not sharp yet so there`s more to come.`

Gareth himself had been keen to start against his former club on Saturday and said, 'I`d had a difficult final season there, got injured last season in the opening minutes of our game at Bradford when I was singled out, so I was keen to start and it was even better to score.`
