RUFC - Sharpsy 'We Did Try'

Rotherham United skipper Ian Sharps insists that the players did put the effort in on Saturday defeat by Southend at the New York Stadium.

While accepting that the team were below par the thirty-one year old told David Beddows of The Advertiser that he thought everyone tried. 'Everyone runs around and tries their hardest,` Sharpsy said, 'but the emotion and the aggression has to be channelled in the right way. We just couldn't get a foothold and were second best all over the pitch.

'I feel every defeat but you do feel more responsible as captain. You are trying to gee the lads up when you are three-nil down and that`s hard.

'Fans will criticise and I can take it on the chin now. When you win you get accolades and when you get beaten you take the criticism. You have to go home and look at yourself and see what you can do better and everyone can do better than they did on Saturday.

'We were talking about starting games at a higher tempo before the game on Saturday but it just didn't seem to happen.

'We want to fill the stadium every week but matches like that won`t bring people back, it will drive them away, and we can only apologise for the performance.`

The team were below par - Yep, can`t disagree with that, in fact, I thought they`d gone into the first bunker and stopped there.
We just couldn`t get a foothold on the game - No you couldn't. And apart from a 'foothold` on the game once again we witnessed players slipping over in crucial positions - I really think it`s time we started looking at these 'slippers` they wear.
…it will drive them away - I know to four 'roving` supporters there on Saturday and, unlike Arnie they definitely won`t be back.
