'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Warney 'Chuffed To Bits'

Rotherham United coach and former player Paul Warne told MillersPlayer that it was a 'great honour' to be awarded a testimonial by the club.

Speaking at the New York Stadium, the thirty-nine year old, who hung up his boots at the end of last season to join the Millers back room staff said, 'I'm sincerely chuffed that I can come here with my wife and kids and have a game means the world to me.

'This is my eleventh season at the club and I've been generally lucky when I've been here that it's been pretty successful. Touch wood, I wasn't here through the bad times. The first season I joined we got into the play-offs but lost to Leyton Orient, the second season we won promotion and the third season we won promotion and the next four seasons we were in the Championship.

'Mick Harford came in and I was one of four players out of contract and we all got released. Now I'm older and wiser I can see why and know that managers want to bring their own players in. I then had two years at Oldham and two years at Yeovil and then I got the chance to come back and have spent the last three years trying to get promotion with the team and I've only got good memories of being here.'

Asked what his testimonial year would entail, Warney said, 'I've got a very good committee behind me. I've got Brian Chapple, Matthew Twigg and Paul Rickson. We haven't organised anything yet but I'm thinking of having a comedy night at the Stadium and I might do it so I get a lot of the old players back. I'll have a game here so I can get five minutes on the pitch and fix it so I get a goal. I might have a golf day but I haven't planned anything just yet.'
