'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - That Man Stevie Evans ....

Rotherham United fans were, shall we say, somewhat perturbed when Chairman Tony Stewart appointed Steve Evans as manager in April last year.

Straight away Steve must have felt the friction his appointment had caused and asked the fans to 'get behind' him with Mr Stewart doing nothing but praise the man he'd fetched in from Crawley.

It didn't start that well with a three-one loss at Shrewsbury but the final three games of the season saw the Millers win one and draw two with Steve insisting 'there was more to come.'

Even with players coming in from right, left and centre I still think some of the Millers fans were a bit cautious about this man who was going to lead us out into the new Stadium back in Rotherham.

But, over the last few months we all seem to have bought the dream that is Steve Evans. We've questioned his tactics at times, we've questioned the players he brought in and let go, but I don't think we've once questioned his passion for our football club.

And all the time he's been saying similar things to 'we'll be in the top three in the new year'.

There were those amongst us who said they would never sing this man`s name in association with Rotherham United and, when he first came, some secretly agreeing with the opposing fans' idea of what they saw of Steve Evans.

But, on Tuesday, I was one of the thousand and more singing Steve Evans name - he came over to the fans, touching his Rotherham badge, fists thumping the air and smiling. And yes, he might be a bit of a 'nutter' (for want of a better word) but he's our 'nutter'. He's brought something to the football club that is akin to fresh air.

And, we go into the FA Cup game at the weekend in third place in the table.

That man Stevie Evans - he did what he said.
