RUFC - Evans Not Lost The Dressing Room

Join The Vital Debate

Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans says that he expects players to have opinions and, although he doesn't like them airing them in the dressing room after games, he did tell The Advertiser that it was 'lively` after the wins against Accrington and Rochdale over Christmas.

With the fans airing their views on local radio phone-in`s there has been more than one suggesting that the Gaffer has 'lost the dressing room`. Evans refuted this.

'The dressing room at Aldershot when we got beat in the FA Cup was quiet then you lose a couple more and rumours start. But it`s not players who start that it`s people outside the club which is why you have to have a siege mentality where it`s us against them.

'Players have opinions but we don`t give them in dressing rooms on match days or there would be chaos. I chat to my players every day and you always take counsel more from your experienced players.

'I can tell you I've never had an argument with any player who has left. I`m honest with my players and staff and they`re honest with me. There is nothing hidden, no secrets, no agendas. I am more open with the supporters than any manager there has been at this football club and, in the words of others, maybe too much at times.

'I have never experienced anything like this where people make up internet stories almost on a daily basis saying Steve Evans has fallen out with this player, Paul Raynor has fallen out with that one or whoever wants to leave. It is something that has been there since we joined the club and was there under Ronnie Moore and Andy Scott.

'But, it`s something you have to live with and I`m not frightened of the job.`

I think for Steve Evans his reputation of, and I`m not saying this unkindly, of being a loud-mouth goes before him. We have all said in the last few months that we believe our team doesn't get the rub of the green with referees because of the Manager - in fact we all smile when we see the Fourth Official and know he`s in for an ear-bashing all afternoon! We`ve got a man at the helm who is high profile and, like it or not, we - and him - are going to have to live with it.
