RUFC - Evans 'We Defended With Strength'

RUFC - Evans 'We Defended With Strength'

Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans praised his players` spirit after the one-nil win away to Plymouth Argyle yesterday afternoon.

'It was another hard-fought battle,` he told Radio Sheffield after he`d seen Kieran Agard give the Millers all three points. 'We dug in and we worked hard and we know if we do that then we`ll get chances.

'Early in the second half we missed a couple of chances in quick succession and then Kieran pops up and gets us a goal then you have to defend heroically. And Craig Morgan, Claude Davis, Kari Arnason, Joe Skarz and Johnny Mullins, well what a defensive unit we have.

'But we have to give credit to Plymouth who I thought were terrific today.`

Saying that Reuben Reid had a bit too much time and room in the first half for his liking, Evans said, 'At half-time I demanded more from Claude Davis and Craig Morgan and they were outstanding because Reid wasn`t out there and he`s a very good player and caused us a few problems in the first half. But in the second half they put him into their inside pocket and dealt with him. And that`s commendable.`

Just before the goal the Millers had got Daniel Nardiello ready to come on from the bench and Evans said, 'We were conscious that one or two results were heading in a certain direction and with that in mind I was ready to put Nards on, then we got the goal, so I was pleased I didn't have to do that because he`s not one hundred per cent fit.

'We should have scored after the goal too when we carved them up two or three times. Lee Frecklington probably should have scored and maybe Pringle. Then in that last few minutes of added time, when once again we`re in front and they play six, we had to defend which we did with a real strength and togetherness.

'I can only speak positive things about these players.

'And look at the supporters who have travelled here today in cars, buses and I wouldn't be surprised if a few boats haven`t found their way here. They are just incredible. And there`s no doubt there will be Millers fans hanging off the roof next week.'
