The will-he/won't he, should he/shouldn't he saga surrounding Matt Tubbs and Rotherham United is back amongst the transfer rumours again with the latest being that the striker is about to sign - again.
Millers Boss Steve Evans signed Tubbs when he was Crawley Town Manager from Salisbury City and then he was sold to Bournemouth and it was pretty clear that Evans was disappointed with that sale plus the sale of Tyronne Barnett.
The link between Evans and Tubbs has been in the background since Steve took over at Rotherham and although he wasn't exactly number one at Bournemouth the Dorset club didn't want him to leave. But will the twenty-eight year old play more for the Cherries now they have been promoted to the Championship or would he be playing more football in League One if he joined the Millers? Well that could be a tick on the pro's side of the paper for a move up North.
I'll be honest, I haven't a problem with Matt Tubbs whether he joins the Millers, stays with the Cherries or goes elsewhere but with his name being continually linked with Rotherham I do wonder if it could be putting other strikers off joining?
At a recent fans forum Assistant Manager Paul Raynor told the fans that they had 'strikers on the radar' - well, hold on a minute, if you was one of these other 'strikers on the radar' what would you be thinking? If it was me I know what would be whirling through my mind. It would be 'hang on, if Tubbs is coming in then he's obviously going to be first choice, so where will I fit in?' Any footballer I've ever had dealings with or heard speak nearly always says 'I just want to play football' so would you come to a club that is clearly after a named striker and would push you down the pecking order?
And what's taking so long for Tubbs to say 'aye' or 'nay'? Last year Evans' trump card would have been the new stadium, this year it's the promotion. But maybe its Bournemouth who won't let him go but we don't know for sure. We have also heard that the Salisbury born striker didn't want to move 'up North' but, once again, we don't really know that's the case. We do know that Tubbs and Evans had a good working relationship when they were at Crawley Town.
Who knows what the what's and ifs and whys are but what we do know is that Matt Tubbs is still not a Rotherham player - and if he ever does wear a Rotherham shirt I, for one, just hope it's all been worth it.
