RUFC - Former Chairman Dies

Former Rotherham United Chairman Ken Booth sadly died last night.

Ken Booth senior rescued the club from bankruptcy in 1987, taking over from Syd Wood, giving the club and its fans the best part of two decades of stability which included promotions and its first trip to Wembley in the Auto Windscreen Final all the while underwriting the clubs losses annually within his CF Booth Company.

During the later years of his reign as Chairman there was a lot of controversy surrounding him and his family involving the club which, sadly, turned many fans against him, when probably a man, who was then in his eighties, should have been getting a little respect.

The 2004/5 season saw the Millers at an all time low, going twenty games without a win, stuck at the foot of the table, Championship wages and the collapse of ITV Digital and the overdraft was climbing all the time. In December 2004 Millers05 agreed to take the club on with the Booth family lending the new regime around 650,000 to start them off.

Of course the rest is history and we now have a shiny new stadium with a Chairman who is doing and saying all the right things and probably won`t come out with one of the sayings I recall Mr Booth Snr saying when asked why he had 'rested` then Manager Billy McEwan but kept him on the payroll, his reply was, 'It may seem like a funny thing to do, but we`re funny people in Rotherham.`

Whatever your thoughts of Ken Booth, who would have been ninety-three at the end of this month, just remember, but for him in the late 80`s, we might not have been where we are now.

RIP
