RUFC - Reserves Win

Rotherham United Reserves 2 Scunthorpe United Reserves 1

A strong Rotherham United Reserves side beat Scunthorpe Reserves at Parkgate by two-goals-to-one this afternoon.

The Millers starting line-up had, what I would class, seven first team players in with the Iron having former Miller Deon Burton in their starting line-up alongside the likes of Etienne Esajas, Michael Collins and Gary McSheffrey and Paddy Madden who joined Scunthorpe last week.

The visitors got off to a good start and Scott Shearer did well to get down to a George Grayson shot. But it was the Millers who took hold of the game and on six minutes Wes Thomas had a shot saved by Iron 'keeper James Severn while Claude Davis, back after a three match ban, headed the ball wide from a Michael O`Connor free-kick. Having more and more of the ball it was no surprise when the Millers took the lead on ten minutes. A great run from Haris Vuckic saw him put over a good pass to Thomas who got passed the opposing defender and slotted home from inside the box. The Millers went from strength to strength and Vuckic had a good shot that ended up in the side netting while Blair Turgott was firstly denied by Severn and then saw a shot hit the top of the crossbar before going out. With all the Millers dominance it was a bit of a blow when the Iron equalised on thirty-eight minutes. An Andy Dawson free-kick took a wicked deflection and went in off former Millers Deon Burton to make it one-one going into half-time.

The first shot of the second half was nearly identical to the last of the first with Dawson taking a free-kick but this time he put it wide and minutes later McSheffrey tried to chip but the shot was weak and didn`t bother Scott Shearer. Danny Rowe did well to block a move from the opposition while Danny Hylton, making just his third start in a Millers shirt this season, had a promising run but it came to nothing. On the hour mark Vuckic dispossessed a Scunthorpe player but then saw his shot blocked. Just after that the Millers made a triple change with Nicky Walker, Ayrton Bevins and Connor Bell replacing Hylton, Vuckic and Thomas. Fifteen minutes later the Bell and Bevins combined and got the ball to Walker who in turn found the head of O`Connor and the Northern Ireland International headed in at the far post. With eight minutes to go the visitors went looking for an equaliser with Hakeeb Adelakun, on for Burton, firing over the bar. The Millers could have gone further in the lead in the final minutes of the game but a Reece Lucas shot was easily saved by Severn.
