RUFC - On This Day - 12th February

Let's have a look back at the 12th February ...

12th February 2012
On this day two years ago we found out that Rotherham United were up for an award. The Millers had been short-listed for the Coca-Cola Community Club of the Year along with Bury, MK Dons, Notts County and Portsmouth.

Shaun Harrad, who was on loan from Bury, said he was here to show people what he could do.

12th February 2011
Three years ago the Millers made the trip to the Kassam Stadium to take on Oxford United. Simon Heslop opened the scoring on eighteen minutes for the hosts with Nicky Law equalising for the visitors on the thirty-sixth minute. Just after the hour mark Callum Kennedy, on loan from Swindon Town and making his debut for the Millers, tugged the sleeve of Steven MacLean just inside the area and referee Simon Hooper first pointed to the penalty spot and then showed the young defender a red card. MacLean picked himself up and took the penalty himself and although Andy Warrington did well to get a hand to it the ball ended up in the back of the net to give the home side a two-one win.

After the game Millers Manager Ronnie Moore said that 'the heads are on the floor in there (the dressing room) but I thought it was a fantastic performance today.'

12th February 2010
Rotherham United midfielder, Danny Harrison, says that the players are letting Ronnie Moore down. Moore had been booed by some of the fans at recent games and hadn't endeared them any more after publicly criticising the players. The Millers had lost to Darlington the weekend before with Danny saying, 'After the Darlington match we were looking around at each other scratching our heads. We all know it was no where near good enough. We let the Manager and the fans down. and we know we've not been good enough in some games. It is only us who can turn it around.'

As the Millers were getting ready to travel to take on Lincoln City Ronnie Moore was talking about the twelve players who were out of contract at the end of the season, saying, 'They should all be bursting blood vessels to prove their worth. After all, where are they going to go from here? Certainly not Read Madrid.' Saying it would be a 'big headache' deciding who he wanted to keep and who he'd let go, Moore carried on, 'I want fourteen lads I can go to war with. The players here are so like-for-like in ability they're like peas in a pod. If a player can't get up for playing in front of a crowd of three thousand five hundred at Don Valley then he shouldn't be in the game. And I can tell you, if I see any one of our players, including Alfie, not putting in a shift out there then they will be sat next to me.'

12th February 2009
The Millers had been short-listed for the 'Community Club of the Year - League Two' award in 2009.

12th February 2008
On this day six years ago the Millers were 'blown away' at Millmoor by Stockport County. Tommy Rowe put County in front on eight minutes but Mark Hudson equalised for the Millers half-an-hour later. Four minutes into the second half Rowe made it two-one to the visitors with Anthony Pilkington making it three-one on the fifty-sixth minutes. Seven minutes later Rowe got his hat-trick giving County a good away win against Rotherham.

Millers Boss, Mark Robins, said 'Everybody had an off-day. I don't want to have a go at everyone but it's difficult not to.'

12th February 2005
Rotherham United made the long trip down to Home Park coming back with a point after a one-all draw with Plymouth Argyle. Andy Monkhouse had put the visitors ahead on twenty-six minutes but six minutes into the second half Referee Fletcher gave Argyle a penalty which Paul Wotton equalised from.

12th February 2002
Fourteen years ago the Millers were entertaining Burnley at Millmoor on a cold Tuesday evening. The game ended one-one with both teams getting a penalty with in the first twelve minutes. Gareth Taylor scored for the visitors on nine minutes with Mark Robins equalising three minutes later.

12th February 2000
The Millers made the short journey to play York City on this day in 2000 which ended in a two-one away win. Leo Fortune-West opened the scoring on seven minutes for the visitors with Barry Conlon, who six years later had a loan spell at Millmoor, equalising for York on the seventy-fourth minute. With it looking like it would be a draw up popped Guy Branston in the final minute of the game to win it for the Millers.
