Tall striker Stewart came up through the junior ranks at Rotherham United who didn't offer him a contract at the end of his apprenticeship when he dropped into non-league football.
However, he proved that judgment to be a wrong one because he subsequently joined Wimbledon where he played a major role in helping them to climb up through the divisions when they were so well known as the 'Crazy Gang'.
Some ten years later he did join the Millers netting six goals in his first season as his home town club gained promotion from Division Four.
Never a prolific scorer in his own right, his aerial ability helped to create many goals for those around him. When he dropped out of the Football League he had made almost 400 league appearances - a fine achievement for a player who was an early reject.

Millers record
1988/89: League apps 19+6 goals 6 Cup apps 5
1989/90: League apps 12+8 goals 4 Cup apps 7 goal 1
