'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - View From The Opposition - Walsall

Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans admitted that his team probably lacked a yard and a bit of quality in the first half of yesterday's draw with Walsall but thought they were the better side in the second half.

Saddlers Manager Dean Smith, meanwhile, thought his Walsall side deserved all three points at the New York Stadium.

Speaking to BBC WM after the one-all draw, the Saddlers Boss said, 'I thought we were excellent today. It was a really good performance and we really deserved to win the game and a cruel deflection at the end and the sending off has cost us.

'We outplayed them in the first half, scored a goal and then they put us under pressure for the last ten minutes of the first half and the second half we've had to defend a lot of ball into our box and I thought we were fantastic at doing it. And it was cruel at the end.'

Speaking about Ben Purkiss' sending off for two yellow cards, Smith said, 'He got booked in the second minute of the second half when he was trying to throw the ball back to where the throw-in should have been taken and got booked for time wasting right in front of their dugout which probably tells you everything. The second yellow is a foul. I think you've got to be consistent in brandishing yellow cards for similar instances.

'But I'm proud of my players today.'

Maybe Purkiss first yellow was because the referee was fed up with all the time wasting that had gone on in the first half - when the Walsall players were kicking the ball away when the Millers had free-kicks/throw-ins/goal-kicks?
