RUFC - Raynes Says Gaffer Deserves Accolade

Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans has been nominated for the Manager of the Month Award for March and his Assistant Paul Raynor believes he should win it.

'We've been consistently the form team in the division for the last couple of months and I hope he gets that award because it`s a reward for hard work.

'From a clubs` perspective it`s nice when the manager gets some recognition.`

Asked if he thought the Football League really understood Steve Evans, Paul said, 'I hope so and I think the recognition is starting to come. I think people just see him on the sidelines just shouting and balling and being passionate and they don`t see the other side. They don`t see the tactical brain, what a good man-manager he is and how he gets the best out of players. They don`t see what happens on the training ground and in the dressing room. You do need to be angry sometimes and get your point across but he has got a soft side, a human side but people just see that snarling face on the sidelines. He gets people to respond and if they didn't like the Gaffer or didn't want to play for him then they wouldn't do that.`

Also speaking to Radio Sheffield`s Rob Staton about defender James Tavernier who has been nominated for Player of the Month, Rayns said, 'He`s a good player and always plays with a smile on his face. He`s so enthusiastic and works very hard at his game and you have to drag him off the training ground.

'But he gets the reward for the practice. I played a long time ago with David Beckham at Preston and he was just the same. We used to give him stick for being the managers` pet because he`s practicing but practice makes perfect and it`s no surprise when James pulls off free-kicks like he can because it`s what he does on the training ground every day.

'But you know, all the boys are like that and we have to drag them in. But it`s been like that all through the season not just in the last few weeks. It`s good to see.`
