RUFC - Potted History of Parkgate FC

Rotherham United are sending a strong team to take on Parkgate FC this afternoon at Roundwood.

Here's a bit of history about the Steelmen...

The Steelmen are in the Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division finishing nineteenth in the league last season.

Parkgate FC was established in 1969 and called BSC Parkgate and joined the, then, Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League. In 1974, the club joined the Yorkshire Football League Division Three. In 1982 the Yorkshire Football League merged with Midland League and became the Northern Counties East Football League.

In 1990 they changed their name to RES Parkgate dropping the RES four years later.

In the past, Parkgate have been Northern Counties East Division One Champions (2006/7) and, in the same season, they won the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. In 1983/4 and again in 1998/9 they were the Rotherham Charity Cup winners and have three times been runners up in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup.

This will be the fourth time the Millers have played at Roundwood, the game last season being the Millers first pre-season friendly and was played in scorching heat. The first half ended goalless and Steve Evans started the second half with ten new players (just young Daniel Rowe keeping his place). Just after the hour mark the Millers finally got the better of Parkgate when Daniel Nardiello got on the end of a David Worrall cross and put the ball into the back of the net and just before the end of the game Nards was there again to make it two-nil.

The game the season before ended in a six-nil win for the visitors. The first goal came from a Ben Pringle corner which ended in a Parkgate player putting into the back of his own net. A minute later Alec Denton made it two and scored again to make it three-nil. Alex Revell got the fourth before half-time and with a complete change of team for the Millers Kayode Odejayi and Daniel Nardiello got the fifth and sixth goals in the second half.

Kick-off is 2.00pm
